Riboli Family Wines Bets Big on Pinot Noir

PASO ROBLES, Calif., (Sept. 23, 2024) — Riboli Family Wines, family-owned and operated since 1917, announces the acquisition of Doctors Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA in Monterey, California. The vineyard, previously owned by the Hahn Family, is known for producing outstanding Pinot Noir in one of the world’s best AVAs for the varietal. “Our family takes pride in crafting top-quality wines from premier vineyards,” says 4th generation winemaker, Anthony Riboli. “We are excited to continue expanding in California, reaffirming our family’s commitment and dedication to maintaining high-quality standards and sustainability that define Riboli Family Wines. This investment builds on our commitment to producing wines of exceptional quality. Alongside the established Pinot Noir vines, we see so much potential in Doctors Vineyard. While we develop future plans, we are considering unique clones of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and alternative white wine varietals.”

The Doctors Vineyard is planted on the terraces of the Santa Lucia mountain range, overlooking the Salinas River Valley. Located in the middle stretch of SLH, this vineyard experiences warmer temperatures and higher winds than other vineyards. Wide row spacing in Doctors (11 feet by 7 feet) also offers greater sun exposure, and the fog burns off early in the day at this site. Starting at 300 feet of elevation and promptly climbing another 400 feet into the highlands, it is a unique east-facing slope with a particular soil type of sandy loam which, when combined with the Pommard clone, produces complex wines.

This purchase of such history and pedigree to the portfolio speaks to the Riboli family’s mission to provide the highest level of quality in all of their wines. Even with over a century of winemaking experience the goal is always to find opportunities to improve, and adding such a respected source for exceptional Pinot Noir is key. Doctors Vineyard joins Riboli’s esteemed vineyard collection across California’s top viticultural areas, in Monterey, Paso Robles, and Napa Valley.
